At Auralia, a gastric bypass starts from €337 a month, and MagDI™, the bypass made with magnets, from €359 a month over 36 months. Both are all-inclusive: surgeon's fee, hospital, anaesthesia, dietitian programme, the Auralia app, follow-ups and complication insurance. You receive a written quote after your free assessment, so you know the full price before you decide anything.
There is no long waiting list. A patient coordinator calls you within one working day to arrange your free assessment with Dr Loy, in Dublin or online. Dr Loy checks that surgery is right for you, and your date is then planned around your pre-operative tests and dietitian appointment.
Both create a new connection in the small intestine, so food and digestive juices meet further along the gut. That is what changes the hormones behind hunger and blood sugar. A standard bypass also makes a small stomach pouch and joins the bowel with staples. MagDI™ makes the connection with two small magnets and your own healing: the bowel is not divided and no stomach pouch is made. Dr Loy will recommend the right approach for you.
MagDI™ is new to Ireland, not new to medicine. It has been in clinical use since 2021, is offered in around 40 centres in the United States, and is authorised by the US FDA, Health Canada and in Europe. In the published studies the connection formed in every patient, and no leak has been reported at the magnetic connection.
As with any surgery there are risks, including bleeding, infection, hernia and, rarely, the need for a further procedure. Because it is new, long-term data beyond two years is still being collected. Dr Loy goes through the risks with you in full.
No. The connection forms within two to three weeks, and the magnets pass naturally, around six weeks after surgery. Most people do not notice. A simple X-ray confirms they have gone. You cannot have an MRI scan while they are in place, so tell us at your assessment if one is planned.
Both ways are keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic, so you have a few small incisions on your abdomen. With MagDI™ the bowel is not cut, stapled or stitched at the connection. If a gastric sleeve is part of your plan, that part uses standard staples on the stomach. Dr Loy explains exactly what your operation involves.
On average, people lose around 60 to 70% of their excess weight after a gastric bypass. Results vary with your starting point and how you use the aftercare programme. Dr Loy gives you a realistic picture at your assessment.
MagDI™ requires specific training and proctored cases before a surgeon is certified. Dr Loy is currently the only surgeon in Ireland to have completed that programme, and Auralia Private Hospital is the only Irish hospital offering it.
